    Camp Kipwe

    Description:

Designed to creatively embrace the granite boulders, the camp embodies its Swahili meaning as it 'blesses' the mind, body and soul of every traveller that makes the journey. Taking advantage of the nearby Aba Huab River and all consuming expansive landscape, Kipwe offers a refreshing perspective on traditional safari life.

'Kipwe', meaning blessed in Swahili, is built creatively into the large granite boulders of the area and is the latest addition to the Vision of Africa camps.

    Accommodation:

The camp is nestled in the boulders, facing out onto superb scenery. Incorporating boulders, small red basalt rocks and mopane branches, it has a natural organic feel. The nine rooms and one suite are round in shape, with large outside decks to admire the view. The outside, partially open bathrooms adjoining the bedrooms have boulder, cement and rock walls, and roofs of rough mopane branches. Hot water is supplied by wood-burning 'donkey' boilers.

The central area of the camp is raised and comprises four thatched domes; the reception area and curio shop, dining room, lounge and bar and guest toilets all with amazing views toward the Aba Huab riverbed. An outside boma area is an additional venue for fire-cooked meals. The central sitting area is furnished with wood and cane chairs, a leather couch, rough hewn chunks of wood used as small tables, tree trunk supports and woven lights hanging elegantly from the thatch roofs.

A small swimming pool built into the rocks and a viewpoint with 360 degrees of breathtaking beauty, are two attractive outdoor features. Activities at the camp include nature drives with the possibility of seeing the desert-adapted elephants in the dry season, Twyfelfontein excursions to the rock engravings and guided walks in front of the camp with Kipwe's experienced guides.

    Etendeka Mountain Camp

    Description:

In the foothills of the Grootberg massif, in stunning scenery set amidst the ancient Etendeka lava flows of northern Damaraland, you will find Etendeka Mountain Camp. Here the ancient basalt has been slowly eroded over millennia, leaving scattered boulders lying upon dramatic flat-topped mountains.

The emphasis here is on Nature, and this eco-friendly camp bears testimony to her many riches. Accommodation is in ten en-suite meru tents, which are connected by pathways to the main dining tent. Extensive use is made of solar power throughout, both in the kitchen and the guest bathrooms, as well as for general electricity requirements. Necessary comforts have not been overlooked though, and these include flush toilets, hot-and-cold running water and the stunning open-air 'bucket shower'. Simple, fresh, wholesome meals are prepared, either on solar or on open fires, and enjoyed under African skies.

Desert adapted wildlife forge a precarious existence amongst the towering basalt mountains and Mopani-shaded rivers beds of the Kunene region. This apparently unforgiving landscape is actually refuge to a diverse number of plant and mammal species. Desert elephant and black rhino share boulder strewn valleys with watchful cheetah and thundering herds of oryx. Dew darkened game trails show the heavy track marks of lion and the mountain zebra they hunt. Scorpions prowl between volcanic rock shards and snake eagles drift through the warm afternoon breeze.

Your days here are spent exploring the area on foot and in open game drive vehicles with the exceptionally knowledgeable guides. This is not a fast paced safari, but rather a privileged introduction to an environment that holds many of Namibia's unique natural attractions.

Here one is reminded that we are all guests of Mother Nature.

    Desert Rhino Camp

    Description:

Desert Rhino Camp is situated in the 1-million-acre private Palmwag Reserve in northwest Namibia, between Etosha and the Skeleton Coast - few places on the planet can offer this level of privacy and wilderness experience.

This desert reserve has a number of fresh water springs that support healthy populations of animals including desert adapted Back Rhino and Elephants as well as large populations of the rare Hartmann's Mountain Zebra, Giraffe, Oryx, Springbok and Kudu. The predator population is the largest outside of the Etosha National Park with over 100 Lions, Cheetah, Leopard, Brown and Spotted Hyaena. Bird life is prolific and diverse with most of Namibia's endemics present.

Desert Rhino Camp has eight large East African-styled "Meru" tents each with an en-suite bathroom comprising hand basin, flush toilet and a classic bucket shower that is filled with hot water whenever needed. The tented dining room offers uninterrupted views of the desert and mountains. Welwitschia (ancient desert adapted plants) plants dot the plain in front of the camp. The primary activity is rhino tracking which is usually by vehicle until a sighting is made by trackers and then on foot. Guests can also enjoy full day outings, with a picnic lunch, on the reserve.

Desert Rhino Camp is a joint venture between Wilderness Safaris and the "Save the Rhino Trust" - a non-profit conservation organisation that has been working in this area for 20 years. The Trust has been singly responsible for helping to ensure that these rare, desert adapted black rhino survived the slaughter that went on throughout other parts of Africa in the 80s and 90s. Today this population of black rhino is growing in numbers and the area boasts the largest concentration of rhino anywhere on the planet outside of a national park. Community game scouts who were employed by the Trust to help with the patrolling and monitoring all these years are now seconded to the camp and are the trackers and guides. A portion of every guest
