    Duesternbrook Safari Guest Farm

    Description:

Duesternbrook Guest Farm near Windhoek offers a traditional, individual and adventurous stay for independent tourists who are looking to experience wildlife up close on exciting game drives and big cat feeding tours.

Our safari farm is located in central Namibia not far from Windhoek and is therefore an ideal venue for your first and last nights in Namibia, or for a few days rest between the northern and southern parts of your Namibian tour. Duesternbrook is a private game reserve of 14,000 ha and, as the oldest guest farm in Namibia, is steeped in history.

We offer accommodation in traditional lodge rooms, furnished safari tents and at a rustic campsite. The historic old farmhouse is built in colonial style of natural stone and enjoys an elevated location with breathtaking views over the wide riverbed and the mountains beyond.

Things to see and do: Safari tours: On our safari farm we have an abundance of wildlife including oryx, wildebeest, steenbok, cape eland, kudu, waterbuck, hippo, zebra, baboon, cheetah and leopard. Whether you choose a morning mountain drive, a standard game drive or the special tours to see our cheetahs and leopards in their natural surroundings, we guarantee that you won't be disappointed.

Game drives: In the morning we offer a mountain drive where you can experience the sun rising on the Khomas Highlands amid stunning scenery. Once the sun is up your guide will drive you into the mountains to watch nature waking up while you enjoy a cup of coffee or tea. With luck you may even be one of very few who have caught a glimpse of the rare Hartmann's mountain zebra.

The standard game drive takes place in the late afternoon when the animals emerge from the shadows after the heat of the day. Catch sight of a jackal as you drive along, stop to take pictures of warthog and antelope and enjoy the diverse birdlife of the farm before watching the sunset on the edge of the dam in the company of our four very curious hippos. We also offer safaris on horseback during which you can get much closer to game such as giraffe, kudu and zebra.

While staying at our guest lodge you can use our large pool, visit our information centre or go for a hike on one of four well-marked trails. When you book our standard package one game drive and one cheetah and leopard tour is included.

    Fish River Lodge

    Description:

Fish River Lodge in southern Namibia is the only lodge perched directly on the rim of the Fish River Canyon offering guests breathtaking views of the canyon from sunrise to sunset. Experience first hand the geological forces that unfolded 300 million years ago, when the Fish River began to etch its way through hard quartzite forming a Canyon 90 km long, making it the world's second largest Canyon. Set in a grove of ancient Quiver trees (Aloe dichotoma), the Lodge has been carefully designed to echo the terraced and rugged terrain as well as the colours and textures of the landscape thereby offering guests a pleasant change from the typical 'safari' type lodge found elsewhere in Africa. There is a blend of classical and contemporary furnishings and many of the accessories have been made by San and Nama communities whose ancestors once roamed the terrain; authenticity, comfort and simplicity are key to the Lodge's unique ambiance. Black eagles enjoy the thermal updrafts and fascinating desert adapted plants thrive in this unique eco system. Rare mountain zebra and elusive klipspringer, oryx and kudu roam the remote valleys and side canyons, whilst Cape clawless otter, fish eagle and other water-loving species inhabit the permanent pools along the river. The geology of the canyon is as fascinating as the archaeology and for the expert or the curious, there is much to discover and learn. Ancient pictoglyph sites are in abundance as are Stone Age tools, a reminder of those who wandered the landscape and took refuge at permanent water holes in this harsh terrain thousands of years ago. With 45 000 hectare situated in Canyon Nature Park, including 75 km of river frontage, here you have space to explore, time to relax and friendly staff to make you feel welcome. With only 8 meters from the rim of the Canyon, at Fish River Lodge you will truly feel as though you are on the edge of eternity.

    Dabis Guest Farm

    Description:

Dabis Guest Farm is situated north of Helmeringhausen and lies in the Konkiep Valley, in the south-west of Namibia. The farmstead is surrounded by a limestone plateau and is an ideal stopover between Windhoek, Luderitz, Sossusvlei or the Fish River Canyon.

Owned by the Gaugler family since 1926, this working sheep farm is now run by the families 4th generation, Stephan and Jenny. They maintain a fitting balance between running a guest house and operating their sheep farm and many of their guests comment on their forward thinking, enthusiasm and environmentally sensitive disposition.

In the peaceful farm atmosphere, guests can enjoy German-Namibian hospitality, a high standard of personal service and delicious home-cooked meals, prepared mainly from farm produce. An insight into Namibian farm life, as well has the difficulties on sheep farming in this arid area of the country, can be grasped from the German, English and Afrikaans speaking hosts.

Breakfast on the farm includes cereal, yogurt, juice, fresh baked bread, cheese, salami and tea/coffee. Fried eggs are also available. Tea/coffee with freshly baked banana bread/cake are served in the afternoon. A typical dinner meal would be lamb stew with rice, beetroot salad and butternut. There is no bar, but soft drinks, beer and wine are available.

There is a garden with a beautiful green lawn and large shady trees to relax under. There are some wonderful views from the swimming pool and guests are also welcome to use the tennis court. Rackets are available if guests fancy a smash or a volley before afternoon tea!

Accommodation is in 6 simple, but comfortable farm-style twin-bedded rooms. They all have en-suite showers and flush toilets. 1 of the rooms has a bath. Each room has a small sitting area, a dressing table and towels and guest soaps are provided. Although the rooms do not have fans, air-conditioning or mosquito nets, the windows and front door are covered with a gauze screen. Outside each room, on the veranda, is a sitting area.

One of the main attractions here is learning about day-to-day farm life. Most guests go on a 1-2hr farm drive after afternoon tea/coffee and cake. Farming techniques are discussed and explained to give the guests a much deeper understanding of farming in an arid land.

Dabis mostly farms crossbreed sheep, for lamb production, and advanced rotation techniques are practiced due to the area's meager rainfall.

Dabis Guest Farm is family-orientated and children are very welcome.

In the evening, a generator supplies electricity (220v) for a few hours.

    Damaraland Camp (Wilderness Safaris)

    Description:

Situated on the northern face of the Huab River valley and looking south toward the imposing Brandberg Mountains, Damaraland Camp offers its guests endless vistas. Early morning mists generated by the clash between the icy Atlantic Ocean and the warm desert air of the Skeleton Coast, drift inland along the river sand canyon, providing sustenance to the flora and fauna of the region.

This comfortable and friendly camp offers walks and drives and/or mountain bike trails in one of the best wilderness areas in Namibia. Although wildlife is not concentrated, Damaraland Camp is situated where the rare Desert Elephant roams, alongside Gemsbok (Oryx), Springbok, Ostrich and other hardy desert animals. Rare succulent plants somehow manage to eke out an existence in this harsh countryside.

Damaraland Camp accommodates guests in 10 large en-suite adobe-style thatched units that are raised off the ground, with walk-in dressing areas and enough on each deck to sit and contemplate the wonders of the desert. The spacious living area combines the dining, bar and fireplace. There is a swimming pool next to the bar. New technology combined with ancient knowledge has produced an eco-friendly yet high performance design.

Activities throughout the area are in 4x4 vehicles.

    Area Info:

The van Coller family moved from Johannesburg South Africa in 1946 to the farm Solitaire when Mr van Coller bought 30 000 hectares of land from the former South West Africa Administration. They farmed with Karakul sheep on the farm Koireb to the South of Solitaire.

This was a totally undeveloped tract of land situated between Ababis to the North and Koireb to the South and was called Areb. They later sold 10,000 hectares to the west. Mrs van Collar named the farm Solitairemeaning a diamond set all by itself, (and she also meant a very solitary or lonely place) thus combining the definition of being unique or one of a kind and very precious but solitary place. When the farm was sold to the van Collars its was declared waterless but over the years five boreholes were drilled to produce water.

Van Collar built a shop with a large stoep (veranda) in front, a petrol pump was installed and, eventually a small church was built. A Dutch Reformed minister from Maltahohe came out to Solitaire every 3 months to conduct services and Mrs van Collar played the organ and rehearsed the choir. The shop was also the local Post Office. In 1968 the van Collars sold the Solitaire farm to Mr Maritz, who was a retired magistrate from Luderitz.

    Attractions:

Solitaire Guest Farm Desert Ranch is the perfect place to plan excursions to Sossusvlei, Sesriem Canyon, Naukluft Mountains and Spreetshoogte Pass. Sunset Drives, Cheetah Tracking, Hiking Trails and Scenic drives are also conducted on the farm.

    Camp Kipwe

    Description:

Designed to creatively embrace the granite boulders, the camp embodies its Swahili meaning as it 'blesses' the mind, body and soul of every traveller that makes the journey. Taking advantage of the nearby Aba Huab River and all consuming expansive landscape, Kipwe offers a refreshing perspective on traditional safari life.

'Kipwe', meaning blessed in Swahili, is built creatively into the large granite boulders of the area and is the latest addition to the Vision of Africa camps.

    Accommodation:

The camp is nestled in the boulders, facing out onto superb scenery. Incorporating boulders, small red basalt rocks and mopane branches, it has a natural organic feel. The nine rooms and one suite are round in shape, with large outside decks to admire the view. The outside, partially open bathrooms adjoining the bedrooms have boulder, cement and rock walls, and roofs of rough mopane branches. Hot water is supplied by wood-burning 'donkey' boilers.

The central area of the camp is raised and comprises four thatched domes; the reception area and curio shop, dining room, lounge and bar and guest toilets all with amazing views toward the Aba Huab riverbed. An outside boma area is an additional venue for fire-cooked meals. The central sitting area is furnished with wood and cane chairs, a leather couch, rough hewn chunks of wood used as small tables, tree trunk supports and woven lights hanging elegantly from the thatch roofs.

A small swimming pool built into the rocks and a viewpoint with 360 degrees of breathtaking beauty, are two attractive outdoor features. Activities at the camp include nature drives with the possibility of seeing the desert-adapted elephants in the dry season, Twyfelfontein excursions to the rock engravings and guided walks in front of the camp with Kipwe's experienced guides.

    Rossmund Lodge

    Description:

The Rssmund Golf Resort & Lodge is situated approximately 7km from the coastal town of Swakopmund on the northern banks of the Swakop riverbed. The resort comprises a 20 room lodge, an 18-hole golf course and a residential estate.

Perfect not only for golf lovers, but also for those who want to stay close to Swakopmund, but prefer to stay outside of the town bustle. One of the most unique locations in the country, the view out of your window may feature the Swakop riverbed, the coastal sand dunes, the Namib Desert or one of only five pure desert golf courses in the world. It is silent and peaceful, and sunshine is more likely inland of the coastal mist that often cloaks the town.

Twenty chalets surround a stunning rock swimming pool. The large boulders you see as a foundation of the pool were found there as builders were digging. Rather than remove them, they incorporated them into the design. In the same spirit, the beautiful white stones of the walls were all gathered from the golf course property. Everything was built with the philosophy of integrating the construction into the surroundings.

Within these natural enclosures, first class accommodation awaits. All of the chalets are en-suite with a fireplace, satellite TV, mini bar and private patios. The reception area houses a beautiful bar, lounge and breakfast room. A comfortable braai area is active several nights a week, and the lodge even houses its own hair salon.

Any activity can be arranged from reception, and you will find yourself just down the road from horse riding, camel riding and local foods on the plots along the Swakop riverbed. Ten minutes from the ocean, five minutes to the sand dunes and a short walk to the Swakop River Bed, this spectacular location is where civilization and tranquillity come together.

    Harnas Wildlife Foundation

    Description:

    Location & Description

Omaheke is one of the thirteen regions of Namibia and lies on the eastern border of Namibia which is the western extension of the Kalahari Desert. The name Omaheke is Herero for Sandveld and it is here, east of Gobabis, where Harnas is situated. Harnas Wildlife Foundation is the longest running wildlife rehabilitation centre in Namibia. Since the establishment of Harnas over 30 years ago, they have developed a very successful international foundation that supports their causes and passion for conservation. Harnas Wildlife Foundation focusses on the establishment and upkeep of safe zones for animals captured or expelled from encroached environments, as well as the rehabilitation and care of sick, injured or abandoned animals. They strive to give animals a second chance at life, by rehabilitating and releasing them back into their natural habitat or caring for the ones that will not survive in the wild. Harnas believes that people and animals are equally entitled to lead a life without negative stress like hunger and pain. Throughout the years, population numbers of animals like lions, cheetahs, wild dogs and other species have plummeted, but with its rehabilitation projects Harnas Wildlife Foundation makes a difference by releasing capable wild animals into safe wildlife parks of Namibia.

    Caffe Brazza

Description: A good cup of coffee can be a lifesaver in a café in one of the two major shopping centres in Namibia's capital Windhoek, especially after an exhausting shopping sortie in temperatures that exceed 35˚C. Caffé Brazza is situated in the centre of Maerua Mall on the perimeter of Windhoek's CBD. The smell of freshly brewed coffee is irresistible, so we decide to settle down, rest our feet and let the world flow by. On the menu are a variety of tramezzini filled with a selection of vegetables, chicken or meat; panini; and light meals including soup, pasta and salads. Early birds can choose between a ‘hearty’ or a ‘healthy’ breakfast and for the sweet tooth there are croissants, muffins and scones with butter and cream and different preserves, as well as a selection of cakes and other desserts. Fresh fruit juices, like the frulato (fresh fruit blended with ice cream), are favourites in summer.

    Gathemann Restaurant

Description: Namibian cuisine at Gathemanns Urs Gamma, one of Windhoeks top chefs, who has been running Gathemanns for the last 20 years, is well known for introducing local produce to his well established menu, including beef, game and fish dishes of exceptional standard. Like the fruit of the maguni or cork monkey-orange tree (Strychnos cocculoides)with its different flavours of mandarin, orange and banana, which makes a fantastic water-based ice cream.
The fruit is large, about the size of a pomegranate, and yellow when ripe, and is also used for its medicinal qualities. Similarly, wild grenadilla from Owamboland have an intense red colour, scent and taste and also make a delicious sweet and sour dessert if added to yoghurt. A variety of traditionally grown and highly nutritious beans come from Owamboland - their nutty flavours and various colours make interesting eating and most are sourced at traditional markets in Katutura.
Green asparagus are rich in minerals from the ground at the Namibian coast, where they grow. Urs uses his imagination when serving them either raw, roasted in olive oil with grated parmesan, a pinch of ginger, garlic and crushed coriander on top, or cooked and served with a hollandaise sauce or sliced very thin as a carpaccio with saffron vinaigrette drizzled on top and so the possibilities go on and on...
Not forgetting to mention the world famous Namibian truffles and also the omajova (mushrooms which grow on anthills after the summer rains) which taste delightful when combined with sour cream, served as a sauce on any meat or fish dish, as well as our own fresh Namibian oysters. Experience the finer aspects of Namibian cuisine at Gathemanns Restaurant, which opens every day, except on Sundays. We serve gourmet dishes as well as Namibian game and fresh fish from the coast of Namibia. Restaurant Gatheman has an exclusive selection of South African wines.

Ruacana Falls Excursion (All year activity)

The dramatic 85m Ruacana waterfall was once a natural wonder, but all that changed when Angola's Calueque Dam, 20km upstream, and NamPower's Ruacana hydro power plant was built to generate electricity. When there's a surfeit of water, Ruacana returns to its former glory as one of the most spectacular sights on the continent.

The waterfalls are located near Ruacana on the Kunene River in Northern Namibia.

    RiverDance Lodge

Description: Captivated by the river and the people whose history and lives are intertwined with it, Tino and Karin Punzul spent the next four years turning their dream of a lodge in the Kavango region into a reality. Working with local craftsman, they build the lodge from the ground up. The traditional owners of the land and the community have shared in the process and will share in the future of the lodge’s proceeds. As owners and your hosts at River Dance, Tino and Karin share their passion for the magic of the river, their knowledge of the bush, and the spirit of generosity, an essential part of life in Namibia, with their guests. Their passion for River Dance is contagious, and their years of hard work and waiting for their dream to come true means that you don’t have to. River Dance is yours to experience today!
