  • One of the oldest buildings in Windhoek with its corner stone laid in 1890. The Alte Feste served as military headquarters in 1915 and then as a hostel for the Windhoek High School in 1935. It now houses the state museum, where the historic independence Collection reflecting events leading up to the independence of Namibia can be seen. In 1957 it was declared a National Monument.

The Chistus Kirche was designed by Gottlieb Redecker and was officially consecrated in 1910. It is the oldest Evangelical Lutheran church in Namibia. The design of the church is based on the idea of a basilica. It was built in the neo-Romanic style, but also shows the influence of art nouveau. Only local building material was used, except for the Carrara Marble pillared entrance. The outside walls where constructed from quartzite sandstone, which was found and quarried near the present grey Railway Bridge on the Gobabis Road near Avis Dam. All other material was imported from Germany: the roof construction from the firm Eggers in Hamburg and was originally covered with corrugated iron. This was only replaced in 1971 by Harvey tiles during extensive renovations. The stained glass windows were manufactured by the firm Franke, of Hamburg, and the windows of the pulpit were donated by the emperor Willhelm 11 whilst the altar bible was donated by his wife Empress Augusta. The Christus Kirche was proclaimed a national monument on 29 November 1974.

  • The 600 million years old 30 Gibeon Meteorites mounted on steel columns in Post Str Mall are extraterrestrial (originating in space). Between 1911 & 1913, Dr. Paul Range, the State Geologists for the Government of German SWA, collected 37 meteor fragments in the Gibeon area. Their weight ranged between 195-506 kg. Two were stolen and four were donated to various institutions for research purposes. Since the installation of the meteorite fountain, another meteorite has disappeared. All pieces are thought to be part of one large ore, with a mass of over 17 tonnes, which fragmented long before it entered the atmosphere. The Meteorites were proclaimed a National Monument on 15 February 1950.

No one seems quite certain why the statue was erected, but some people believe it might commemorate the vast number of kudu who died in the 1897 rinderpest outbreak. A visiting sculptor, Professor Franz Behn of Munich, drew a kudu in the guest book of Mrs. Olga Levinson, President of the Arts Association.

The Equestrian Statue or Reiterdenkmal was the idea of Colonel Ludwig von Erstoff, the Commander of the Kaiserliche Schutztruppe. The statue was designed by Adolf Kürle and cast in the Gladbeck foundry in Berlin. It was brought to Swakopmund by ship in 1911 and transported by railway to Windhoek. It was originally placed between the Christus Kirche and Alte Feste but was moved in 2009 a further 50m towards the end of the Alte Feste, to make way for extensions to the National Museum. It is a double-sized statue, 4.5m high and stands on a pedestal made from granite found in the Okahandja area. It depicts a German Schutztruppe cavalryman in full uniform (less scabbard and saddlebags for artistic purposes) and faces northwards (in the direction of the Imperial Army). The statue represents an eventual victory after heavy fighting. The statue was officially proclaimed a national monument on 2nd January 1969.

'The twin tower cathedral, with its neo-Renaissance features, is of particular architectural importance. The façade of this right-angled building is particularly impressing with its high peak towers on both sides of the central part with its three arched entrances. The rustic work of brown stone is also striking'.

  • After Wilhelm Sander sold Heinitzburg in 1916, he obtained a piece of ground not far from the other two castles, to build a dwelling for himself, a building which is today known as Sanderburg. Many changes have been made over the years, but the original of Willie Sanders style has been preserved. The castle presently still serves as a house.

The Tintenpalast is the seat of the Namibian parliament since independence in 1990, however, it was always the seat of the legislative. The building was designed and built by Gottlieb Redecker between 1912 and 1913 and was opened as the seat of the German colonial government on 1 November 1913. The name derives from the German word of "Tinte" (meaning "ink") and "Palast" ("palace"), due to the high amounts of ink used. The Parliament Garden is one of the most beautiful and well kept park areas in Windhoek. It was designed only in 1931 and built in 1934.

  • The park serves as a central park and is the only larger park area besides the Parliament Garden and the cemeteries. Very popular is the colonial "Café Zoo" as well as a childrens' playground and open air theatre. Besides serving as an oasis of tranquility, the Zoo Park also has a prehistoric past. In 1961 bones of a more than 5,000 years old elephant where discovered. An elephant memorial is built at that place. Furthermore, a memorial from the German colonial time remembering the killed German soldiers is located in the park. The name Zoo Park derives from the zoo that was located here between 1916 and 1963. In 1956 parts of the park area were destroyed to widen the Kaiserstrasse (now Independence Avenue). In 1963 the rebuilt park area was opened again, called Dr. Verwoed Park, however, renamed into Zoo Park again in 1989.
